Quality Overview

The quality of our labels is of vital significance to our future. Many of our customers are from the pharmaceutical industry, where a label error could result in a huge and costly recall. So perfection gets to be the basic standard at Blue Ribbon. That carries over into making our other labels. Blue Ribbon’s quality assurance program has worked for many years to keep our customers satisfied and our labels almost always perfect.

To assure consistent and continuous quality, Blue Ribbon adopted a Quality Security & Accountability Control (QSAC) program that meets the federal standards for labeling drug, food, and cosmetic products. Following its guidelines, Blue Ribbon has maintained a 100% perfect track record.

Quality Assurance Programs

QSAC starts with customer approval of materials for the label. The raw materials are checked to be sure they meet specifications. Customers approve artwork before plates are made; this includes reviewing all text to go on the label.

On press, a ‘make-ready’ sample is examined by the Plant Manager, who checks the quality of the plates and the color match. Every 8,000 feet, an abrasion test is performed on the ink and the drying lamps are checked. Press personnel inspect the labels under strobe lights and flag any ink problems so that those labels can be destroyed.

Depending on your needs, finished labels pass through one to three inspection stations. At each, strobe lights ‘freeze’ every label so that imperfections—anything from a slight smudge to a broken letter—can be picked out and the offending label replaced. The final station also verifies the accuracy of the count. At one of “machine revision”, a TV camera check each and every label… assuring 100% perfection without the possibility of human error.

Each job order is accompanied by a checklist documenting every inspection procedure. It also lists, by batch number, all materials used to make a label for future reference.

All the protocols in the world won’t do, however, unless staff are committed to carrying them out. Blue Ribbon staff members are dedicated to maintaining our high standards of quality.
