The purpose of a product tag is to give consumers important information they need to know when deciding what to purchase. Sometimes there is not enough space to print all the information a label needs. Product tags are an additional platform to offer information to consumers.
Traditionally, a product tag is a tag or a booklet attached to an elastic string that is fastened on a bottleneck or a jar. An example would be if a company introduces a new BBQ sauce and wishes to enhance its value. They might consider developing a few recipes in a booklet tag attached to the package. The product tag gives consumers at the point of purchase an added reason to buy.
Another use of product tags could be for vitamins. The product tag could tell consumers why the product would enhance their well-being or explain why the ingredients are beneficial. Product tags could feature cross product coupons where consumers purchase one item and save on another (buy shampoo and save 50¢ on conditioner). This adds value to the product and helps as a deciding factor for consumers.
A method to test the success of product tags would be to sell the same product in, for example, four stores around town. Develop product tags to use in two of the four stores, track sales, and usually you’ll find that stores utilizing product tags have increased sales. Then, print product tags for use in all stores. With proven results, you’ll know that product tags enhance the value of a product and ultimately lead to increased sales.
